Many family histories, memoirs, and other genealogical resources have been donated to the German-Texan Heritage Society over the years and are held in the Trenckmann Library at our downtown Austin location (the German Free School).  Many German-Texan families are accounted for in these materials, including:

There are also more general genealogical resources available in our library, such as:

  • GTHS: German Immigrant Ancestors (1997) by Christa Prewitt – A compilation of member-submitted family sheets

  • Genealogical research guide to Germany (1988) by Margaret Krug Palen

  • German American Names (1995, 2nd edition) by George Fenwick Jones

  • German-English Genealogical dictionary (1992) by Ernest Thode

  • German immigration to America in the nineteenth century: A genealogist's guide (1985) by Maralyn Wellauer

  • German research materials in the Clayton library in Houston, Texas (1998) by Elizabeth Hicks

  • Germanic genealogy: A guide to worldwide sources and migration patterns (1997, 2nd edition) by Edward R. Brandt

  • In search of your German roots: A complete guide to tracing your ancestors in the Germanic areas of Europe (1994, 3rd edition) by Angus Baxter

  • The German research companion (2010, 3rd edition) by Shirley J. Riemer

  • A New Land Beckoned; German Immigration to Texas, 1844-1847 (1966) by Ethel Hander Geue

  • New Homes In a New Land; German Immigration to Texas 1847-1861 (1970) by Ethel Hander Geue

The GTHS’s quarterly journal is also an excellent resource. Previous editions (1979-2017) are available through the Portal to Texas History and the Trenkmann library catalog.

New Interactive Map Connects You with German Genealogy Resources

We’re pleased to announce the launch of a new resource designed to help you with your German genealogy research: The German Genealogy Resource Map.

This interactive map, developed by IGGP partner representatives (and friends!) Nancy Myers of the Ahnenforscher Stammtisch Unna and Kent Robinson of Palatines to America, enables you to visualize and easily locate valuable resources to help you with your family history journey.

Easily locate and explore resources in Germany and the United States:

●      Local genealogical societies and groups that specialize in researching German-speaking ancestors

●     Archives, genealogical libraries, and historical societies

●     Specific resources near your ancestor's home village or immigration destination

Simple and User-Friendly Features:

●     Unique icons and colors make it easy to identify different resource types

●     Click on any icon to see detailed information, including name, location, and contact information

To access the map, click either German Genealogy Map on the Palatines to America website or Forschungshilfen on the Ahnenforscher Stammtisch Unna website.

We hope this map resource will be a helpful tool for German genealogy research, providing a comprehensive and easy-to-use way to find archives, libraries, historical societies, and genealogical groups that specialize in researching German-speaking ancestors.

If you would like to embed the map or add a link to the map on your own website, we kindly ask that you credit the Genealogy Resources Mapping Project of the Ahnenforscher Stammtisch Unna and Palatines to America

Feedback: We welcome your feedback, reports of any inaccuracies, and suggestions for additional resources to include. To contact us, send an email to GenResMap@googlegroups.com.
