Thursday, October 11

·  German Free School Reception, 5:30 - 8:00 pm          

Special guest speakers, art exhibit, live music, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, German wine and beer. (For GTHS members and invited guests)

 

Friday, October 12

·  Oakwood Cemetery Tour, 9:45 -11:30 am

GTHS Genealogy Editor, Liz Hicks, will conduct a walking tour of Historic Oakwood Cemetery, featuring visits to some of the graves of those connected to the German Free School, as well as other prominent early Germans. Meet outside the GTHS entrance, 507 E. 10th St., at 9:45 a.m.  We will car pool to the Cemetery (I35 & 16th Street).

·  Genealogy Q&A session, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Puzzled about your German ancestral research?  Then join Liz Hicks and Charles Locklin for a question and answer session about how to start your Genealogy research and how to move beyond stumbling blocks.

 

·  Happy Hour & Dinner at Scholz Garten, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm ***

An informal gathering at this Austin landmark and oldest business in Texas (est. 1866). Enjoy tasty German beer and Texas barbeque with friends old and new.

 

Saturday, October 13

·  Bus Tour of German Austin, 9:30 - noon, $25

Join us on a bus tour of German sights in Austin and learn about the history of German settlers with local historian and expert tour guide Howie Richey. Includes some walking.

 

·  Ceremonial Tapping of the Keg, 1:00 pm

            Experience the Austin version of an age-old tradition.

 

·  Honoring of German Free School Descendants, 2:00 pm

            Join us in honoring the descendants of the pioneers who began the German Free School.

 

·  OKTOBERFEST!, noon - 9:00 pm

Enjoy live music, folk dancing, German-Texan food, Biergarten, tours of the German Free School, educational displays, vendors and authentic German games!

 

 

All activities take place at the German Free School, 507 E. 10th St., and are free unless otherwise noted. Both tours begin and end at this location. ***Cost varies. Scholz Garten is located at 1607 San Jacinto.
